Networking Event Scheduled for Central Illinois Alumni

Central Illinois MBA alumni are invited to attend a networking event on Thursday, November 19. The event is scheduled to take place along with Krannert Uncorked and will include wine tasting, snacks, and music. New Scholarships Announced for Professional MBA

Dean Larry DeBrock and the College of Business have announced two new scholarship programs available to Professional MBA applicants. These scholarship programs were created for the purpose of supporting local residents who have been affected by the weakened economy with full tuition for the part-time MBA program (see article). Illinois MBAs Organize Career Conference for Veterans

Class of 2009 alumnus Chris Petersen and current MBA student David Chonowski have organized a career conference for MBA students and recent MBA graduates who are military veterans. This event, which features a number of top MBA hiring companies, will be held in Chicago, Ill., on Saturday, October 16. Professional MBA Professors Recognized in University Publication

Professors Greg Northcraft and Hayden Noel, who both teach classes for the Professional MBA, were recently featured in Inside Illinois for their business insights in a down economy. Professor Northcraft highlights the importance of engaging workers at all levels for making company-wide decisions. Professor Noel identifies that companies that reduce advertising to survive the recession risk sales declines that linger long after the economy rebounds.

"Business Bash" Welcomes Alumni to Campus for Homecoming

The College of Business Alumni Association invites alumni and students to attend the "Business Bash" after the Illinois vs. Michigan St. football game on October 10, 2009, during Homecoming Weekend. Alumni and students can enjoy great food, a cash bar, and a kids area featuring Illini games. Football tickets are available in the Business block while supplies last. Senior Economics Editor for the Wall Street Journal Presenting on Campus

The Center for Business and Public Policy, in conjunction with the Academy on Capitalism and Limited Government, has organized a panel of experts to speak on the topic of “Are We Regulating Capitalism out of Existence?” Keynote speaker and Illinois alumnus Stephen Moore, Senior Economics Editor for the Wall Street Journal, will be joined by a multidisciplinary panel of experts to address this question on Thursday, October 1, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the Illini Union. Experts to Speak on Changes in Investment Banking

The College of Business Development Office and the Finance Club will host a Trader Forum on Wednesday, September 23. Five alumni panelists from the world of investment finance will discuss topics including candid insights of market operations over the past year, fiscal and monetary policy affecting the marketplace, the role of investment banks, and how to find jobs in the new generation of finance. The panel will start at 6:00 p.m. in Deloitte Auditorium of the Business Instructional Facility and will be preceded by a reception in the BIF Commons at 4:30 p.m.

On-campus InfoSession Scheduled for September

The admissions office will be hosting a Professional MBA information session on Monday, September 21. The session will begin at 6:00 p.m. with an overview of the Professional MBA curriculum and structure as well as the application process. Presenters will also discuss new scholarship opportunities made available for the incoming students. Chicago Cubs Director of Promotions to Speak to MBA Students

College of Business alumnus Matthew Wszolek, Director of Sales and Promotions for the Chicago Cubs, will be speaking to Illinois MBA students, faculty, and alumni on Wednesday, November 11. RSVPs will be required to attend.

Professional MBA InfoSession to Be Held for Research Park

Professional MBA InfoSession in Bloomington

Profressional MBA to Host Faculty Reception

The Illinois Professional MBA Class of 2009 will host a faculty reception on Wednesday, May 6, in the Atrium of the Business Instructional Facility (BIF). The Professional MBA faculty will be honored, and one faculty member will receive the Professional MBA Faculty of the Year Award. All current Professional MBA students and faculty are invited to attend.

Professional MBA Application Now Available

The online application for Spring 2010 admission to the Professional MBA program is now available. Executive Vice President of Ace Hardware to Discuss Business Ethics

Rita Kahle, the Executive Vice President of Ace Hardware, will present during the Leighton Lecture on Ethics and Leadership on Monday, April 13, at the Deloitte Auditorium of the Business Instructional Facility. The event, which will begin at 4:15 p.m., will be co-hosted by the College of Business and the Center for Professional Responsibility in Business and Society.

Illinois Part-time MBA Changes Name to Professional MBA

The Illinois Part-time Evening MBA for Working Professionals has had its name changed to the Professional MBA. The name change does not indicate a change in the curriculum or course stucture. Classes will continue to be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00-9:00 p.m.

MBA Student Gains Recognition in New Venture Competition

Professional MBA student Conrad Tucker, and his start-up company, CentriOpt, recently placed first runner-up in the Commercial Venture Division of the V. Dale Cozad New Venture Competition. CentriOpt produces an Aerodynamic Particle Separator, an air filtration system that could be used residentially with HVAC systems, or installed in homes or business as a pre-cleaner, removing heavy particles from the air. Tucker's team also took the prize for the best elevator speech.

MBA Students to Study in Berlin and Mexico City

Fifty-nine Illinois MBA students will participate in week-long study abroad courses at Freie University in Berlin, Germany, and IPADE in Mexico City, Mexico, during the week of January 12, 2009. The opportunity to study abroad allows Illinois MBA students to gain international experience while fulfilling a course requirement. First-year MBAs Brett Pearce (Berlin) and Loren Friedman (Mexico City) will blog about their trips at illinoismbastudents.blogspot.com.

Professional MBA Alumna Authored Journal Article

Alumna Suzanne Davis, J.D., and Professor Paul Lansing wrote an article that will be published in the Fall 2008 issue of the DePaul Journal of Healthcare Law. The article, entitled "When Two Fundamental Rights Collide at the Pharmacy: The Struggle to Balance the Consumer’s Right to Access Contraception and the Pharmacist’s Right of Conscience,” analyzes the legal, public policy, and philosophical implications of current regulation of emergency contraception.

Illinois MBA Offices Closed for the Holidays

The Illinois MBA offices, as well as most offices campuswide, will be closed for the holidays and will reopen on Monday, January 5. If you are a student and have an emergency, there is an Emergency Dean that you can contact anytime during the holiday season. Project Manager Developing New Claims Processing System

Illinois Part-time MBA student Ram Kulkarni, Project Manager at Patni Americas Inc., is currently working on a project to develop the world's largest claims processing system for one of the largest automobile insurance companies in the Midwest. This new system will enable clients to process claims and pay bills automatically without human interaction. This is an exciting project for Ram because he has the opportunity to directly apply what he is learning in the Illinois MBA to his job as well as communicate with multiple vendors and manage different groups of employees.

Web Programmer Involved in University Project

Dan Harmon, Part-time MBA student in the Class of 2009, has been busy working with a small team for the Provost Office at the University of Illinois on an Enrollment Projection Model. This model will be used to predict future enrollment and tuition income figures to be used by colleges, The Board of Trustees and other administrative units to budget and plan for future terms. It will also be used for individual course enrollment projection. It will have a web interface for up-to-date projections along with historical trend analysis.

Alumnus Receives Promotion with Electrolux

Andrew Myers, Part-time MBA Class of 2008 graduate, was recently promoted to Project Manager with Electrolux Major Appliances in Augusta, Georgia. He will be assisting the Marketing Manager with product generation planning. His responsibilities will include managing the refrigeration division in the Industrial Design Center and the staff in the Cold Technology Center to execute the generation plan within Electrolux’s product development budget through 2011.

InfoSession Scheduled in NEW Business Instructional Facility

The Illinois MBA will host an on-campus information session for the Part-time Evening MBA for Working Professionals on Wednesday, September 17, in the new Business Instructional Facility. Admissions representatives will give an overview of the program as well as details on the application process. Student Receives Promotion at ADM

Andy Powers, Part-time MBA Class of 2009 student, has recently been promoted to Business Manager of ADM Specialty Feed Ingredients. Since taking this new position, he has enjoyed the challenge of new projects and has been able to apply much of what he has learned in the Illinois MBA to his job. He is involved with a major capital expansion project for the division, evaluating potential merger and acquisition opportunities in key strategic global markets and preparing for ADM’s global sales conference in Chicago.

Alumna Earns Job Promotion

Illinois MBA alumna Stacy Fisher was recently promoted to Director of Business Support for The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). She is responsible for managing the business areas in the Midwest office and for process improvements in the animal hospital and mobile clinic, which are both stationed in New York City. The Illinois MBA helped Stacy achieve the level of expertise required for process improvements that are crucial to ASPCA.

Student Leading Big Project at Carle Clinic

Part-time MBA student Steve Eckhardt, SharePoint Administrator at Carle Clinic, is currently the lead on a project which involves designing and building a new contract management system to handle the entire contract life cycle. His role is to work with employees from IT as well as compliance in order to ensure successful implementation. He is able to apply what he learned in Organizational Behavior as he leads and motivates business professionals through this project.

Part-Time MBA Graduate to Join NIBCO

Travis Murphy, Part-time MBA graduate, will begin a new job with NIBCO as a Continuous Improvement and Logistics Manager.  NIBCO is a worldwide manufacturer of flow control products for residential, commercial construction, industrial, and irrigation markets.  The combination of Travis’s previous academic and work experience, as well as his networking skills, attribute to this career enhancement.

PTMBA Student Managing Eastern Illinois Foodbank Food Drive

Jessica Paulsen, Part-time MBA Class of 2009 student, has recently accepted a position as Director of Marketing and Development for the Eastern Illinois Foodbank.  She is responsible for all marketing and fundraising efforts, coordinating food drives, and managing the volunteer program.  She is currently working on EIF's largest food and fund drive, Food for Families, which takes places each fall.  In addition, she is helping with a series of events to celebrate the Foodbank's 25th anniversary.

Part-time MBA Student Wins Award for Campus Publication

Julia Stackler, Part-time MBA Class of 2010 student, recently received an Award of Excellence from the University and College Designers Association for her work on the Institute for Genomic Biology building-dedication promotional booklet. More than 1,500 print entries were judged on the basis of excellence in concept, design, effectiveness, and creativity. Julia is a Media Communications Specialist with Creative Services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Part-time MBA Student Starts Own Business

Part-time MBA Class of 2009 student Justin Smith is applying the skills and knowledge he has acquired through the program in a new business venture, Smith Asset Management Inc.  Justin recently established this investment company in Champaign and has already been applying what he learned in Accounting and Economics to build his business.  As he continues to expand his business, he plans to take advantage of the multiple networking opportunities that are available through the Illinois MBA and the University.

MBAs to Participate in Convocation Ceremony

On Saturday, May 10, the Illinois MBA Class of 2008 will participate in the MBA Convocation Ceremony at 9:00 a.m. The ceremony will honor students from the Full-time MBA, Part-time Evening MBA for Working Professionals, Executive MBA (located in Chicago), and Executive MBA-Warsaw. PTMBA Student Busy at the Earthquake Center

As Program Coordinator for the Mid-America Earthquake Center at University of Illinois, PTMBA student Jessica Vlna has had some excitement at work lately due to the recent earthquake and aftershocks in Illinois.  The Center has briefed the White House regarding FEMA protocols and homeland security issues.  Some of her responsibilities include assisting in the preparation and coordination of reports for government sponsors and serving as a liaison to the media, UIUC staff, students, and faculty.

Net Impact to Host Guest Speaker

The UIUC chapter of Net Impact will host guest speaker William Blackburn, author of The Sustainability Handbook—Management Guide to Achieve Social, Economic, and Environmental Sustainability, on Tuesday, April 15. Mr. Blackburn has more than 30 years of professional experience in sustainable development, environmental health and safety, and emergency response. His lecture will give insight on sustainability and why it is important from a business and academic standpoint. PTMBA Student Involved in Caterpillar Global Project 

Mark Slater, IT Analyst and Part-time MBA Class of 2010 student, is currently involved with a new global project at Caterpillar. The logistics division is using SAP, a software package that manages a variety of business functions, including financial, supply chain, and customer relationship management to develop a global system template. The template, which defines global, common processes, will be used as a base for local implementations at various Caterpillar sites around the world. Slater's role is to manage the financial thread of the global implementation and integrate it into the other business processes.

MBA Association to Host Spring Gala

Part-time Student Chosen to Represent University

Part-time MBA student Conrad Tucker was on one of the final teams chosen to represent University of Illinois in the final round of the V. Dale Cozad Business Plan Competition. His team finished first in the Elevator Speech Competition and second in the Commercial Business Plan Venture. This competition is designed to encourage students, researchers, and community members to create new sustainable businesses in the Champaign-Urbana area.

Class of 2010 is Off and Running

PTMBA Class of 2010 students in Organizational Behavior are working on the first case study of their Illinois MBA career. Students are applying teamwork and leadership concepts they have learned in the course to solve the Digital Equipment Corporation case. Because many Part-time MBA students do not have a business background, this is the first case study they have ever completed. However, students are ready for the challenge and confident they will be able to apply the same concepts to their current jobs.

Webcam Shows Progress on New Business Building

GMAT Testing Center Now Available at University of Illinois

GMAT test takers now have the opportunity to register to take the GMAT at a testing center on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Test takers may reserve a test appointment at this test site now by going to www.mba.com.

Practice GMAT Available Saturday, February 23

Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions will be offering a free practice GMAT examination on Saturday, February 23, on the Urbana campus of the University of Illinois. This event will allow you to experience the exam under proctored conditions, receive a detailed score analysis, and learn strategies to improve your score. Illinois MBA Attending “2008 Chicago Business School Forum”

The Illinois MBA will have an admissions representative attending the “2008 Chicago Business School Forum” this Saturday, January 26, starting at 10:00 a.m. The event is organized by Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions and will include a GMAT strategy session, an MBA panel discussion with Chicago-area business school representatives, and a networking session. Women in Business to Host Leadership Conference

The 5th Annual Women in Business Leadership conference will be held Saturday, February 16, with the theme "Expand your Horizon". This year's conference will feature multiple panel discussions as well as keynote speaker Diane Adams, Vice President of HR for World Wide Sales and International Theatres at Cisco Systems, Inc. Students Planning for International Study Trips

A total of 23 part-time students will be participating in the weeklong study abroad trips offered each year during Winter Break. Twelve students will travel to Mexico City and attend MBA classes at IPADE Business School. Eleven more students will travel to Warsaw, Poland, and attend busines classes at the University of Warsaw. Both groups of students will join full-time students in visits to local companies, not to mention sightseeing tours around these great international cities.

Students to Finish Year with Group Projects

Each year, after completing the fall module of classes, part-time students engage in real-world business projects for course credit. The Class of 2008 will be developing a marketing plan for a product they redesigned in their New Product Development course. Groups from the Class of 2009 will select a process from the workplace of one of their group members and study, analyze, and create an improvement plan for that process. Both classes will be responsible for giving presentations on their findings in January.

Students Return to Class

Students of the Part-time Evening MBA program return to class this week after a two-month break. Students will attend classes for ten weeks and then spend the last part of the semester working on team projects that they have obtained from Central Illinois businesses.

Classes to Resume Shortly

Although the university has started classes for the fall semester, our part-time MBA students are still enjoying their summer break. The part-time students will enter their new classes for the semester starting Monday, September 10. Each year, part-time students go on break during July and August.

GMAT Preparatory Session Set for July 24

Kaplan Testing Service will be offering a free GMAT preparatory session on Tuesday, July 24, starting at 6:30 p.m. If you are planning to apply to an MBA program and will be taking the GMAT, you will not want to miss this opportunity to get free test-taking advice from a trained GMAT instructor. Furthermore, representatives from the Illinois MBA will be there to answer any questions you may have about our Part-time Evening MBA for Working Professionals. Summer Break Approaching for Part-time Students

Part-time students of the Illinois MBA will soon complete their evening classes for the summer and enjoy a two-month break from class during the months of July and August. This break gives students the opportunity to spend more time with family and friends and to recharge for the next module of classes.

We have scheduled two more information sessions for the Part-time Evening MBA for Working Professionals -- one in Decatur and the other in Bloomington-Normal. The Decatur event will be held on Tuesday, May 8, at the Decatur Public Library. The Bloomington-Normal event  will be held on Tuesday, May 10, at the Bloomington Public Library. New Group of Part-time Students to Start Class

Thirty-six part-time MBA students attended PreTerm on Saturday, January 7, and will begin their studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on Monday, January 22. Students complete two different courses during each ten-week module--one class on Monday evenings and the other class on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The new class of students will complete the program in June 2009.

Part-time MBA to Offer Second Shuttle Service

During the first year of the part-time MBA, a shuttle service was offered for students traveling from Bloomington-Normal to the Urbana campus for the evening classes. In addition to that service, another shuttle running from and back to Decatur will be added this year. The response from students regarding this service has been positive as it saves on travel expenses as well as providing additional time to complete course readings and to socialize with classmates.

PreTerm 2007 Set for Saturday, January 6

PreTerm 2007 for the incoming class of students will be held on Saturday, January 6. PreTerm is required for all incoming students. During this event, students will be set up with email accounts, register for classes, participate in team-building activities with their new classmates, and much more.

Illinois MBA Offices Will Be Closed for Holidays

The offices of the Illinois MBA will be closed for the holidays from Monday, December 25, to Monday, January 1. The offices will reopen on January 2. We wish everyone a happy holiday season and look forward to a great year in 2007.

Part-time MBA Students Engaging in Team Projects

Students of the Part-time MBA recently finished their coursework for 2007. They will now apply their new knowledge by engaging as teammates in real-life business projects. In each of the first two years of the program, students join their classmates in taking on projects assigned by central Illinois businesses.

Application Cycle Now Closed

The application process has ended for the class beginning in January 2007. If you have submitted an application but have not sent in all materials, please contact us to let us know when your remaining materials will be submitted. The application cycle for the class beginning in 2008 will start next summer.

No Classes during Thanksgiving Week

Final exams for the current module will be held the week before Thanksgiving. There will be no classes during the week of Thanksgiving. Class meetings for the team project course will begin the following week.

Deadline to Sign Up for Mexico City Study Trip Extended

Classes Begin for Part-time MBA

College of Business Dean Avijit Ghosh kicked off the evening by welcoming the inaugural Part-Time Evening MBA class on Monday, January 23. Students then settled into the classroom to learn from one of the many respected faculty in the University of Illinois College of Business.

The inaugural class of the Part-time Evening MBA for Working Professionals completed a comprehensive orientation--PreTerm--on January 7, 2006.  Among the day's activities were presentations and team-building exercises.

Military Scholarships for MBAs Announced

The College of Business is establishing a $250,000 scholarship fund for military veterans and active members of the military from Illinois. The fund will provide financial aid to qualified applicants admitted either to the Part-time Evening MBA for Working Professionals or to the Executive MBA Program.
